Posted Date: 11/10/2011 9:14:00 PM

While it is a known fact that diabetes and hypertension are affecting many more people, the actual figures are truly shocking: half the population of Karnataka is possibly affected with either one or both these diseases. The findings of the Screening India’s Twin Epidemic study for the state of Karnataka was released on Wednesday, according to which 49 per cent of the people surveyed in the State suffer from diabetes, hypertension or both. The study has surveyed patients across 800 centres in Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, New Delhi, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Gujarat, and Madhya Pradesh. The objective of this Sanofi-SITE study is to quantify the concurrent incidence of diabetes and hypertension and to increase awareness of what is called the ‘twin epidemic’ which has alarming implications for healthcare in India.
