In what appears to be yet another indictment of India’s dysfunctional government-run healthcare system, 10 babies died within 48 hours last week at a government hospital in Andhra Pradesh.
Four infants died Wednesday night and six more died Thursday at a government hospital in Kurnool, which caters to a population of 700,000.
A local newspaper, the Bangalore Mirror, reported that the newborns had been put on a ventilator that did not have any oxygen. According to the news report, the state medical and health minister, Dr. D.L. Ravindra Reddy, said the kids had been born underweight and there was no human error. He told a news channel that it was “God’s error.”
