Dental Students protest demanding change in course schedule
Posted Date: 8/6/2011 8:46:00 AM

students of dentistry from various colleges in the city assembled at the gates of Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGHUS) on Wednesday demanding a closure to the revised schedule. Students who took up Bachelors in Dental Science (BDS) in 2008 in Karnataka were unsure about the duration of their course as the Medical Council of India, the previous year, had decided that the BDS course must be a fiveyear course. While some states passed orders to replace the compulsory internship year with another academic year to fulfil the stipulation, Karnataka has not taken a decision yet, say students. Later, MCI made one year compulsory internship for medical courses, say authorities. But students and educational institutions have been protesting against a five + one year idea as even the very idea of it led to a drastic downfall in students opting out of BDS in the state. "While I am willing to do a one year internship which students have to pay for, I cannot imagine the financial liabilities in extending the academic year by one more year just to satisfy a rule. The earlier pattern of four + one was good," said a student from VS dental college.
