There are about 600 million people in India who are addicted to beetle nut and tobacco in one form or the other. Of these, around 40% suffer from cancer which is a multi-organ disease. Moreover, of the 40% patients, 90% suffer from oral cancer.
This startling information was given by chairman, State Task Force of Revised National Tuberculosis Control Programme (RNTCP), Dr Rajendra Prasad, who also warned that Uttar Pradesh has the maximum number of cancer patients.
"Cancer is a fatal disease which put a lot of burden on patient in several forms, either physical or financial. In many cases it has been observed that a patient dies of social and physiological pressures rather the disease itself," says Dr Devendra Lalchandani, president, Indian Medical Association (IMA).
