Plenty of natural foods and compounds are good for your oral and dental health. These include fibrous plants that can scrub away some food particles and plaque during chewing, spices that are naturally sweet-smelling, and probiotic yogurts. But using aloe vera to treat bad breath?
Researchers at the PDM Dental College and Research Institute, a university in Bahadurgarh, India, about an hour from New Delhi, recently published a report indicating that aloe vera extract can keep the teeth and mouth clean while preventing tooth decay and gum disease.
The idea isn''t as far fetched as it may sound. Halitosis, cavities and gingivitis are all caused by oral bacteria, which feed off of the food particles left in the mouth after a meal. Over time, this process can leave the mouth smelling bad and the teeth looking quite yellow and decayed.
Aloe vera is a cactus-like succulent plant whose juice or sap is thought to have antibacterial properties. The Indian team stated that they believe this clear gel, which can be gotten by merely breaking open the plant''s spines, can suffice as a toothpaste, denture adhesive and oral mouth rinse.
