The Supreme Court today gave the green signal to the central government and Medical Council of India (MCI) to hold a single eligibility-cum-entrance exam for MBBS and post graduate medical courses starting this academic session.
Noting that the Centre has already issued a notification to hold a Common Entrance Test for graduate and PG medical courses, a Bench of Justices R V Raveendran and A K Patnaik said the decision would apply to private medical colleges too.
Senior advocate Amarendra Sharan, appearing for MCI, said the Centre had on August 13, 2010, agreed with MCI’s plan to go ahead with the implementation of the single entrance criteria. The regulations were notified four months later.
MCI approached the court in October 2010 for a CET in all medical institutions, including private and minority colleges. On February 18, 2011, the Centre informed the Supreme Court that it was in talks with state governments on the issue.
